A Spark of Inspiration!

Hello, hello! Some good news and some bad news--good news first. My foot has almost if not completely healed! Which means... back to taekwondo classes!

On the other hand, it also means I'm going to be a LOT busier. And probably won't have as much time to post. So, I figured I'd give my reason in advance, so I don't have a mass of angry readers with pitchforks and torches knocking on my door. Not that I have a mass of readers. But still. :)

What have I been up to lately? Well, I'm glad you asked! (Shush. I know you didn't. Give me a break, eh?) After the rather abrupt end of my instant Hunger Games addiction, I was feeling pretty book-deprived. I began looking for a good read that would restore my nerdy!Grasshopper self back to its regular state, and guess what I found?

matched Book CoverMatched by Ally Condie. Before you make any comment about it, hear me out. I know it looks like one of those generic trashy/crappy books with an eye-catching cover, like the Clique books. It's anything but. I'm glad I took a chance and for once, didn't judge the book by its cover.

The novel itself deals with a futuristic dystopian society (what is with me and dystopian societies nowadays? ), where there is basically no freedom of choice. Every single part of your life is based on DNA matching, from who you will be married to (your one "true" match) to the meals you eat.

In the beginning of the story, the protagonist expresses her approval of their society, noting that its the only way "optimal results", such as a satisfying and purposeful life can be achieved. When it's her term to be matched, and a complication arises, she begins to question whether having everything chosen for you is really worth it.

If you had the chance, would you rather be data-analysed and guaranteed your perfect match, or freely choose who to love, albeit you may not be 100% compatible? Pretty interesting, eh? I certainly thought so. I'm not giving anything away, but I just finished this book today, and it was pretty incredible. It will be a trilogy, and the second book, Crossed, will be released this November. I can't wait!

So um, that's all I wanted to say. If I disappear and don't reappear for a few days, you'll know why. In the meantime, go check out Matched!

Dreading the worst day of the year,
The Hopping Grass.

P.S. All you fellow Anti-Valentine's Day supporters out there, read this.

  1. In my opinion, what sucks the most about Valentine's day is being alone.

  2. Sigh. That's true. But what can we do? I'd rather flame Valentine's Day than wallow in self-pity. :P
